Nikko Beach

Nikko Beach

Ilgwang Beach is a beach located in Ilgwang-eup, Gijang-gun, Busan Metropolitan City. Compared to other beaches in Busan Metropolitan City, the water is shallower and the waves are weaker, so it is said to be a good beach for summer vacationers with children. The coast is a slightly indented bay facing inland, making it a comfortable beach.

The name of Samseong-ri, Ilgwang-myeon, where Ilgwang Beach is located, comes from "Samseongdae." It is said that Samseongdae originated from the old phrase "Soul of the Spring," where "spring" refers to the medicinal spring and "soul" refers to the place where boats are moored. Currently, the hill in the center of the beach is called Samseongdae.

Ilgwang Beach was the setting for Oh Yeong-soo's short story "Gaetmaul, a Beach Village" published in 1953, and was later used as a filming location for the 1965 film adaptation by director Kim Soo-yeon.

To commemorate this, Gijang-gun holds the Gaetmaul Festival around Ilgwang Beach every August when beach season begins. It is the only sea culture festival in Korea themed around female divers, and features a variety of performances and experience programs that incorporate the unique characteristics of Gijang-gun.
