Jindo Sea Parting Festival

The Jindo Sea Parting Festival, known as a modern-day version of the Miracle of Moses, is held in Jindo every March and April, attracting many tourists.

Parting of the Sea 2019 Thursday, March 3st - Sunday, March 21th

Jindo County, South Jeolla Province, bustling with tourists who come to see the mysterious sea split every year, is located in the southwestern tip of South Korea and is about 30 hours and XNUMX minutes by car from Busan, but if you take a bus from Busan Western Bus Terminal, you will need to transfer at Gwangju and Mokpo in South Jeolla Province. It is difficult to do a day trip, so it is better to plan an overnight stay on Jindo Island or in Mokpo.

The parting of the sea in Jindo, which is called the modern version of the miracle of Moses, was witnessed by Pierlandy, who was the French ambassador to Korea, when he came to Jindo for sightseeing in 1975. It was then featured in a French newspaper and became known to people all over the world. In 1996, the song "Jindo Monogatari" by Japanese singer Yoshimi Tendo became a hit, and many Japanese tourists have come to visit the island.

The mysterious Jindo sea parting appears from the village of Hoedong-ri, east of Jindo, to Modo Island on the other side of the sea when the tide goes out. It is 10 to 40 meters wide and 2.8 kilometers long. The sea parting takes about an hour.

Tourists can stroll along the open sea path and pick up seashells, but after about an hour the tide comes in again and the sea path gradually disappears. There are about 20 such sea partings in Korea, including Muchangpo in Boryeong City, Chungcheongnam-do, but the Jindo sea parting is said to be the largest in scale.

At the entrance where there is a staircase that looks like the sea has parted, there is a stone statue of Grandma Pon that was newly created in April 2004. There is a story connected to Grandma Pon.

Jindo Sea Parting Festival Long ago, Hodong (present-day Hoedong-ri) was named for the large number of tigers that lived there. As the tigers began to appear more frequently, the villagers fled to the opposite island to escape the tigers, but Grandmother Bong was left behind.

The old woman, now alone, prayed earnestly to the Dragon King of the Sea every day to let her see her family. One day, a path appeared in the sea, but Grandma Pon, exhausted from long prayers, was unable to go and see her family.

Meanwhile, the villagers who had fled to Modo Island due to a lack of drinking water returned to Hodong with joy when they saw that the sea had parted and a road had been made. They found Grandma Hong lying on the ground, but Grandma Pon had passed away soon after being reunited with her family. Since then, a "Lingdeung Ceremony" has been held to console the grandmother's soul, and the name of the village of Hodong has changed to Huedong, as the villagers had returned.

If you walk to Kayashima, you won't be able to come back, so it's better to turn back halfway. Also, when walking on the tidal flats, be sure to bring clothes and footwear that you don't mind getting wet. Rubber boots are also sold locally. Even in April, the sea breeze is cold, so be careful not to get cold.

There are no direct bus services from Busan to Jindo, but why not take the plunge and travel to Jindo to see the mysterious sea split?
