Stone ice storage

In a corner of Banwolseong Fortress, which is said to have been used as a royal palace during the Silla period, there is a natural stone icehouse built in the 18th century during the Joseon period.

This stone icehouse, which is about half underground and resembles a small hill with three ventilation holes in the ceiling, was used to store ice in the winter and to be used in the summer.

Among the 18th century stone ice storage facilities in Korea, the Gyeongju Stone Ice Storage Facility is the most perfectly preserved and is the only facility in the vast Gyeongju Wolseong Fortress that welcomes tourists, where the splendor of the Silla royal palace can no longer be felt.
