Buddha statue standing on a cliff in Namsu-gyeok, Gyeongju

The largest rock-carved Buddha statue in Namsan, Gyeongju is located in Yaksu Valley, which spreads out from the top of Geumosan Mountain (468m) to the west.

The head of the 8.6m-tall Yaoshuixi Cliff-Carved Buddha has been lost, but the rock face on both sides of the gigantic rectangular cliff has been carved into a thickness of more than 30cm, revealing the weighty body of the Buddha. The hands and the hem of the robe have also been carved into a medium thickness of about 10cm, and the left hand is bent and placed on the chest, while the right hand is lowered to the waist with the thumbs, middle fingers, and ring fingers of both hands lightly joined together.

The distinctive feature of this rock-carved Buddha is that the long, vertically flowing garment between the shoulders hangs down in a semicircular shape, forming several parallel lines. This technique of expressing the folds in the garment is unique to this rock-carved Buddha.
