Gyeongju Yul-dong Magae Jyorai Triad Standing Statue

Hello,Gyeongju Intercity Bus TerminalIf you cross the Hyeongsan River from there, you will come to the 29th Silla leader,Tomb of King Taejong MuyeolAbout 2.3 km from there, at the foot of the mountain on the left, is Dudae-ri Village (Yul-dong). If you go up the mountain behind this village, you will find the rock-carved Buddha Triad from the Unified Silla period, carved in the 8th century.

The central principal Buddha statue, 3.32 meters tall and carved into the 2.51 meter high rock face, is thought to be the Amida Nyorai who rules over the Western Pure Land as it faces west. It has a dignified face, a sturdy build, and broad shoulders that are lightly carved to reveal the curvature of its body.

The head of the principal image of Amida Nyorai is large, but the top of his head is tied low, making it look as if he is wearing a hat. His legs are spread out to the sides.

The statue of Kannon Bodhisattva stands to the left of the principal image, with its right hand raised above its shoulder, its thumb and index finger forming a circle, and its left hand holding a treasure jar. It is 2.45 metres tall.

The attendant on the right is a statue of Mahasishi Bodhisattva, similar in appearance to the Kannon Bodhisattva, but behind the head of the triad is a halo expressed by a round line.

The Yuldong Cliff-Carved Standing Buddha Triad is considered to have been created during the heyday of Silla Buddhist art in the mid-8th century, when its beauty is both elegant and fragile, delicate and not forceful, yet majestic and imposing, exuding an artistic flair.
