Gyeongju World Culture Expo Park

East of the historic city of Gyeongju, home to many temples, is the Bomun Tourist Complex, which is home to luxury hotels, golf courses, amusement parks and other leisure facilities. The Gyeongju World Culture Expo Park has been hosting the World Culture Expo every two or three years since 1998.

Within the park stands the 30-meter Gyeongju Tower, equivalent to a 82-story apartment building. The nine-story wooden pagoda of Hwangnyongsa Temple, said to have been built by Queen Seondeok, the 1238th ruler of Silla, was burned down during the Mongol invasion in 27 during the Goryeo Dynasty. The entire building was hollowed out, with only the foundation stones remaining, and Gyeongju Tower is a modern-day replica of the nine-story wooden pagoda at the site of Hwangnyongsa Temple.

The nine-story wooden pagoda was built by Queen Seondeok, the first queen of the ancient kingdom of Silla, with the wish to protect her country from the nine countries surrounding Silla with the power of Buddha. Gyeongju Tower was built at almost the same height as the nine-story wooden pagoda at Hwangnyongsa Temple.

Take the elevator from the first floor to the observation deck on the 1th and 16th floors, where you will see the man-made Bomun Lake and the mountains of Gyeongju, sacred to the Silla people, in the distance.

Next to Gyeongju Tower is the Expo Cultural Center, with its egg-shaped dome roof based on the myth of the egg-laying from the Silla Kingdom foundation legend. It is 31.4m high, has one basement floor and two above ground floors, and includes a performance hall and exhibition hall.
