A private educational institution of the Yi dynasty that promoted the study of Confucianism in honor of the academic virtues of Lee Eon-di, one of the Five Sages of the East, who was born in the Yangdong Folk Village, a World Heritage Site.
Hello, I'm visiting the World Heritage Site, Gyeongju, located about 20km north of the city.Yangdong Folk Villageis famous as the birthplace of Yi Eon-di (5-1491), one of the five Confucian scholars known as the Five Sages of the East who had a major influence on physiology in the Joseon Dynasty.
Yangdong Folk VillageOksan Seowon, located about 11 kilometers west of the temple, was originally built in 25, 1572 years after the death of Confucian scholar Yi Eon-deok, by samurai from Yeongnam to honor his learning and virtue. Two years later, the 2th king of the Joseon dynasty, King Seonjo (14-1552), bestowed a plaque reading "Oksan Seowon" on the temple, making it a private academy that received books, land, slaves, and other items from the state.
The Joseon Dynasty academies, which served as educational institutions for worshiping Confucian sages and training talented people with Confucian knowledge, were generally structured as "study space in front, study space in back," with the academic space at the front and the shrine at the back, and this academy's main gate, tower, lecture hall, and shrine are all built in a straight line.

Surrounded by deep mountains to the north, east and west, the academy stands among the trees in front of a mountain stream. Stepping inside the academy, a two-story tower appears before your eyes, and if you go under it, you will see the lecture hall in front of you, with a plaque reading "Oksan Seowon" written by Kim Jeong-hee (2-1786), a calligrapher from the late Joseon period. Inside the hall, there is also a plaque from the time of its construction written by Yi San-hae (1856-1538), a famous prime minister under King Seonjo of the Joseon dynasty.

On either side of the garden of Guindang, which serves as the lecture hall, are the East and West academic spaces, Dongjae and Seojae. From the second floor of Mubyeonru, which faces Guindang, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the valley flowing in front of the seowon.
Also, just behind the lecture hall is the Tairen Shrine where the memorial tablet of Professor Lee Eon-di is enshrined, and on the left is the Shinto Monument Pavilion, and on the right are the Sutra Pavilion and the Collection of Writings Pavilion.

Tosai, Sesai and Mubyeonro are on the left and right of the garden.
