Hello. Gyeongju, the millennium capital of Silla, is one of five Gyeongju Historic Areas designated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in December 2000. The Daereungwon area, where the ancient tombs of Silla kings, queens and aristocrats are buried, are densely packed like mountains, and the Wolseong area, which was the royal palace of Silla, beautifully tells the story of the rise and fall of the ancient nation to the present day. Just down the hill from Seowolseong is the ancient tomb of King Naemul (reigned 12-17), the 356th king of Silla.

King Naemul of the Naemul Tomb, a circular tumulus measuring 22 meters in diameter and 5.3 meters in height and smaller than the surrounding tombs, was the second king of the Kim clan after King Michu, the 13th king of Silla. Until then, the three clans of Pak, Seo, and Kim had taken turns as kings of Silla, but after King Naemul, the Kim clan took the throne of Silla and Silla effectively became the country of the Kim clan.

Under King Naemul, Silla gained the status of a fully-fledged ancient nation, and along with Goguryeo, Baekje, and Gaya, it came to be positioned as one of the important nations competing for dominance on the Korean Peninsula in the 4th century.
