Daereungwon (Heavenly Horse Tomb)

Daereungwon in Gyeongju, South Korea, is a treasure trove of historical heritage that is a must-see for anyone interested in ancient tombs! This is the perfect opportunity to see the interior of Cheonmachong Tomb and view ancient treasures.

Daereungwon is a representative Silla period burial mound park located in Gyeongju, South Korea, and is home to a collection of Silla period stone-piled wooden coffin tombs from the 4th to 6th centuries. Daereungwon is designated as part of the Gyeongju Historical Site and Daereungwon District, and is dotted with the tombs of Silla period kings and nobles, including Cheonmachong and King Michu's Tomb.

In particular, the inside of the Cheonmachong tomb is open to tourists, and a cross section of the tomb can be seen. Replicas of the Silla gold crown, a picture of a celestial horse, and a gold hat are on display at the Cheonmachong tomb.

Daereungwon is dotted with huge ancient tombs as big as mountains, and by strolling through the ancient tomb park you can enjoy the atmosphere of having traveled back in time to the Silla period.

Admission to Daereungwon is free, but if you want to enter Cheonmachong Tomb you will need to pay an admission fee of 3,000 won.

Daereungwon, designated as part of the Gyeongju Historic Area and Daereungwon District (UNESCO World Heritage Site), is home to 1 ancient tombs belonging to queens, kings, and nobles of the Silla period, scattered across a flat area of ​​approximately 1500 square meters. These include Cheonmachong, where over 13 artifacts have been excavated; Michu Royal Tomb, the tomb of the 80th king of Silla; and Hwangnamdaechong, the largest of the ancient tombs in Gyeongju, measuring approximately 25 meters from east to west and 23 meters high.

Cheonmachon Tomb

Cheonmachong is the only ancient tomb whose interior is open to tourists. The huge wall you see before you when you enter is made so that you can see the cross section of the tomb, which was excavated in 1973.Silla Golden Crown(National Treasure No. 188),Pegasus(National Treasure No. 207),Gold Hat(National Treasure No. 189), replicas of Silla earthenware, curved beads, and ring-headed swords are on display (the originals are on display at the Gyeongju National Museum).

The name "Tenmazuka" was given to this mound because a painting of a flying white horse was unearthed on the bark of a white birch tree. It was previously called Tomb No. 155.
