Hello. Located 33 kilometers southeast from the center of Chungju, which is located almost halfway between Busan and Seoul, is Hanuljae, a mountain pass road and the oldest transportation hub developed by Silla during the Three Kingdoms period, when Baekje, Goguryeo, and Silla were fighting each other.
Hanuljae, which was called Gyelipryeong during the Silla period, is a pass 525 meters above sea level that connects Mireuk-ri in Chungju and Gwaneum-ri in Mungyeong. Just after crossing Hanuljae from Gwaneum-ri, there is the site of a Yeokwon (a horse and inn facility) that is thought to date back to the early Goryeo period, and next to it is the site of Mireuk Daewon.
Chungju Mireuk Daewon Site is home to cultural assets such as the Maitreya Buddha (Treasure No. 10.6), the five-story pagoda (Treasure No. 96), the largest turtle base in Korea, and a square stone lantern.
As this temple has a long history, it also has a founding legend. In 935, Silla surrendered to Goryeo and was annexed by the Goryeo Dynasty, but Prince Mai, the last crown prince of Silla, did not surrender to Goryeo. Instead, on his way to Mount Kongo, Kannon Bodhisattva appeared to him in a dream and told him, "If you build a temple and make a memorial for me, your wish will come true," so he founded a temple for Maitreya Buddha here.
Hanulchae served as the central transportation route between Gyeongsang-do and Chungcheong-do during the Silla period. Located about 500 meters east of the Chungju Mireuk Daewonji cave temple in Mireuk-ri, Chungju-si, is a simple, 3.3-meter-tall, three-story stone pagoda from the early Goryeo period that strictly follows the Silla style.
