Bongjeongsa Temple is located about 672 minutes northwest of Andong City, a city of Confucianism in Korea. It is said that in 12 (the XNUMXth year of King Munmu's reign) during the reign of Silla, Nongin, a disciple of Uisang, made an origami phoenix with his sword and flew it after his training. The phoenix landed at this spot and he built a temple there, hence the name Bongjeongsa Temple.
Much of the history of Bongjeongsa Temple since its founding is unknown as many documents were lost during the Korean War (1950-1953). However, during repairs to Geuknakjeon Hall in 1972, a record was discovered of repairs to the building in 12, the 1363th year of King Gongmin's reign during the Goryeo Dynasty. This led to Bongjeongsa Temple's Geuknakjeon Hall being recognized as one of the oldest surviving wooden buildings in Korea, along with Buseoksa Temple's Muryangsujeon.

Within the temple grounds are important buildings such as the Daeungjeon Hall, Geukrakjeon Hall, Gogeumdang Hall, Hwaeom Lecture Hall, Haehoe Hall, Jakrando Hall, Guest House, Yanghwaru Pavilion, Sutra Storage Room, Dongam (Dongam: Yeongsan-an), Soam (Seian: Jijo-an), and Deokhuilu Pavilion, as well as a three-story stone pagoda, a representative stone pagoda of the Goryeo period.

Among these, Gokurakuden Hall is designated as National Treasure No. 15, Daeungjeon Hall as National Treasure No. 311, Gokondo Hall as Treasure No. 449, and Kegon Lecture Hall as Treasure No. 448.
