Byeongsanseowon Seowon

Located about 6km east of Hahoe Village in Andong City, North Gyeongsang Province, Byeongsanseowon Seowon was founded in 1572 when Confucian scholar Ryu Seong-ryong (1542-1607) moved Pungakseodang, an educational institution for the Pungsan Ryu family in Pungsan-eup, to its current location. Later, in 1613, his disciples who admired him developed it into a Confucian school, and Byeongsanseowon Seowon was founded.

In 1863, the king bestowed a plaque reading "Byeongsan" on the school, and it was one of the 1868 academies (In Andong, there were two: Byeongsanseowon and Dosanseowon) that were excluded from the abolition of academies ordered by the powerful Heungseon Daewongun in 47.

Byeongsanseowon Seowon

One of the best-known buildings in Byeongsanseowon is the Mandaeru Hall, a large lecture hall where Confucian scholars gather during ceremonies. From here you can enjoy a magnificent view of the surrounding area, including the Nakdonggang River flowing in front of the academy and the mountains that stretch out like a folding screen on the other side.

In the center of the Shoin is the Rikkyodo Hall, an auditorium where Confucian scholars studied. Behind the Rikkyodo Hall is the Sondeok Shrine, where Ryu Seong-ryong's memorial tablet is enshrined, and the Zobankaku, where over 3000 books and woodblocks used to print books in the Shoin are stored.

A distinctive feature of Byeongsanseowon Seowon is that these buildings were constructed with the intention of harmonizing well with the natural surroundings.
