According to the Geumsansa Temple Historical Records, the temple was not that big when it was first built, but it was transformed into a large temple during the Unified Silla and Goryeo periods. However, most of the buildings, including the Maitreya Hall, were destroyed during the Keicho-Bunroku Invasions (1592-1598). After that, repairs and restorations were carried out, resulting in the current layout of the temple. The three-storey Maitreya Hall (National Treasure No. 3) was rebuilt in 62, and houses the large Maitreya Triad, with the 1635m-tall Maitreya Buddha as the principal image and 11.82m-tall Maitreya Buddhas as side statues. The temple also has many other cultural assets, including treasures and national treasures.
