Hansan Island Jeseungdang

Hello, Hansan Island, located in Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province, was used as the base of the Jeolla Jwasuyeong, led by Admiral Yi Sun-sin, during the Imjin Waeran invasion of Korea, and the following year, in 1593, the Three-Province Navy Controlling Office was established to unify the navies of Jeolla, Gyeongsang, and Chungcheong provinces. It is also the historic site of the Battle of Hansan Island, where the Korean navy led by Admiral Yi Sun-sin defeated the Japanese navy and gained control of the seas.

Relics on Hansan Island include Chungmushi Shrine, dedicated to Admiral Yi Sun-sin; Jeseungdang (then Unjudang), the Joseon Navy's operational command center, which was used from July 1593, 7, just after the outbreak of the Imjin War, until he was dismissed from his position as Commander-in-Chief on February 15, 1597; Hansanjeong Pavilion, where soldiers practiced archery every day; and the Hansan Great Victory Monument. Off the coast of Hansan Island, there is also the tortoise-shell shaped Turtle Lighthouse.
