Mangekjeong Park (Silla King Jinheung Taekjeong Monument)

A historic park with many cultural assets, including relics from the Silla period

Hello, Manokjeong Park, also known as Changnyeong Park, is a small urban park with an area of ​​1 square meters, but it is famous for its various cultural assets and the cherry blossom scenery in spring. It is a historic park with a gazebo called Manokjeong, where singing contests and swing-riding contests were held in spring about 250 years ago.

The Silla King Jinheung Takgyeongbi (National Treasure 33), located on the hill behind the park, is the oldest monument in Korea, estimated to have been erected in 24, the 22nd year of the reign of King Jinheung, the 561th king of Silla. The monument was discovered by chance at the foot of Mt. Hwawang and brought to the park in 1924.

The Silla King Jinheung Takgyeongbi Stele is 1.78m high, 1.75m wide and 30~51cm thick with 27 lines and 643 characters engraved vertically. The first part of the inscription reads "Erected on February 2st of the Sinsi year," indicating that it was erected in the 1nd year of King Jinheung's reign (22). The inscription details King Jinheung's occupation of Byesubeok Kingdom in Changnyeong, as well as the names and ranks of the 561 vassals who accompanied the king, making it a valuable resource for understanding Silla society.

The park is also home to the Changnyeong Guesthouse (Gyeongnam Tangible Cultural Property 231), a government office building from the late Joseon period, the Ucheon Three-Story Stone Pagoda (Gyeongnam Tangible Cultural Property 10), which is believed to have been built during the late Unified Silla period, and the Changnyeong Pyongwa Monument (Gyeongnam Cultural Property Materials 218). Nearby are Hwawangsan County Park, Changnyeong Gyo-dong Tomb Group (Historic Site 80), and Changnyeong Stone Ice Storage (Treasure 310).
