Chungju Nuam-ri Tomb Group

Located about 5km northwest from the center of Chungju, past Damgeumdae, in a hilly area on the west bank of the Han River, the Silla period tombs are located on a small hill about 100 to 130 meters above sea level.

The hills have a ridge extending north, continuing to Eulgungsan Mountain and Jasanseong Fortress. The Chungju Nuam-ri Tomb Group is located about 4 km south of the Jungwon Goguryeo Monument and 2 km southwest of the Chungju Tapyeong-ri Seven-Story Stone Pagoda (also known as the Central Pagoda).

Excavations were carried out from 1989 to 1991, and 23 Silla-era stone chamber tombs, two stone chamber tombs with side openings, and a small stone coffin tomb were discovered. Tomb No. 2 is 1 meters in diameter, 18 meters in circumference, and 60 meters high, and many of the surrounding tombs are also over 5 meters in diameter.

Numerous short-legged, high-rise cups typical of the Silla period have been excavated from the Nuam-ri ancient tombs, and several symbols are engraved on the surface of the pottery, which may indicate the group that made the pottery or that it was special pottery for ritual use. The Nuam-ri area was originally the site of Goguryeo's Wonseong Fortress, but under King Jinheung of Silla in the mid-6th century, it became Silla territory, and there is a record in the "Samguk Sagi" (History of Silla) that aristocrats and citizens were relocated here. The Nuam-ri ancient tombs are known as an important site that sheds light on the history of the Three Kingdoms from the mid- to late-6th century, when Silla expanded northward and confronted Baekje and Goguryeo.
