Located on the mountain behind the Danyang Service Area on the Central Expressway connecting Daegu and Gangwon-do, Danyang Jeokseong Monument was erected during the reign of King Jinheung of Silla (the 24th king, 534-576). Silla generals, including Isabu, attacked and occupied Jeokseong, which was in Goguryeo territory, under royal orders. King Jinheung erected the Danyang Jeokseong Monument to commend those around him, including the yaicha and their families from Jeokseong who had aided the Silla army and achieved great feats, and to console the residents of the Jeokseong area.
The Danyang Seokseong Stele, 93cm tall and National Treasure No. 198, is estimated to have been made between 545 and 550. It is a monument carved by King Jinheung after he secured the upper reaches of the Namhan River from Goguryeo in the mid-6th century.
