Gwangyang Marosanseong Fortress

Marosanseong Fortress in Gwangyang City, Jeollanam-do is a Baekje-era mountain fortress that surrounds the summit of Marosan Mountain, 3 meters above sea level, located about 208.9 kilometers east of downtown Gwangyang.

The castle is located like a horse's saddle, with high sides and a low middle. It overlooks Gwangyang Bay and Suncheon Japanese Fortress to the south, Gwangyang-eup to the northwest, and the Namhae Expressway to the south. About 6.7km to the southwest is Baekje's Suncheon Gyeongdansanseong Fortress. During the Three Kingdoms period, when conflicts were frequent, this was the border between Baekje and Silla, and its location on the sea made it an important military location.

When Baekje established its capital in Gongju (Woongjin) in the 6th century, the first fortress was built to govern Marohyeon, and it was used until the Unified Silla period. Records of Marohyeon are found in the "Sejong Sillok Geography" and "Shinjong Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam," which state that Gwangyang was Marohyeon during the Baekje period.

The size of the fortress is 550 meters in circumference, with the walls 5.5 meters wide and 3-5 meters high. A large number of tiles have been excavated from the Baekje and Unified Silla periods, including earthenware, ironware, bronzeware and tiles with inscriptions such as "Ma O-guan" and "Gun Yi-guan."
