Hwasun Dolmen Site was registered as a world heritage site by UNESCO along with Gojeong and Ganghwa Dolmen on December 2000, 12. Hwasun Dolmen Site is distributed in both valleys of the pass connecting Hyosan-ri, Dogok-myeon.
The top stone of a dolmen, the largest in Korea, can be found here. The ground stone tomb in Chunyangdaedae-ri is 7.3m long, 5.0m wide, and 4.0m thick and weighs about 280 tons. The largest ground stone tomb in Dogok Hyosan-ri is 5.3m long, 3.6m wide, and 3.0m thick and is estimated to weigh over 100 tons.
Unlike other dolmen sites, 3 are clustered together over a distance of about 596km, and a quarry is also located there. This makes it an important resource for elucidating not only the origin and nature of dolmens, but also the evolution of ancient tombs in Northeast Asia.
