Sancheongseok Namgamsa Temple Site Stone Statue of Seated Buddha Biroshana National Treasure No. 233-1
Located in Sancheong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, in the eastern part of Jirisan Mountain at an altitude of 1915 meters, there is Sancheong Naewonsa Temple, which houses the oldest stone seated Vairocana Buddha statue in Korea, carved in the 8th century. This temple was founded by Mujeongseon during the reign of King Muyeol, the 29th king of Silla, and was named Deoksansa Temple. It was later burned down and left as it was, but in 1959 the monk Wongyeong restored it and changed its name to its current one.
The stone seated Vairocana Buddha enshrined in the Biroujeon Hall of Naewonsa Temple was brought from the nearby Seoknamsa Temple site, and a wax stone relic jar with the date of its production (Yeongtae 2nd year, 766) was discovered in a cylindrical hole in the middle stone of the stone Buddha's pedestal, making it known as the earliest Jigeunin Vairocana Buddha created in the Eastern Buddhist culture sphere. In addition, between the main temple and the Biroujeon Hall, a stone pagoda built in the 9th century from the Unified Silla period stands as if telling us of the past.
