Suncheon Castle

Junten Japanese Castle Keep

Suncheon Japanese Fortress, located southeast of Suncheon, Jeollanam-do, was constructed over a period of three months as the final defensive base by Ukita Hideie and Todo Takatora when they captured Jeolla Province during the Keicho Invasion (1597).

At the time, over 13000 Japanese troops led by Konishi Yukinaga were stationed here and fought two battles at Wabashi Castle against the allied forces of Korea and Ming. These battles are said to have been the final and greatest battles of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's invasion of Korea.

After the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Japanese navy headed to Suncheon from Busan and Sacheon to secure a retreat route for Konishi Yukinaga's Japanese army to retreat to Japan. In the Battle of Noryang, General Yi Sun-sin of the Joseon Dynasty was hit by a stray bullet while pursuing the Japanese army and died a heroic death. However, Konishi Yukinaga and his men managed to escape during the Battle of Noryang and returned to Japan via Busan. This is the place that tells the end of the seven-year Bunroku-Keicho War.

The name Wabashi comes from the fact that when the Japanese army was building the Japanese castle, they cut out the land part of Gyeongdansanseong Fortress and built a bridge over a moat that drew in seawater. It is the only Japanese castle in Jeolla Province, but the sea that can be seen from the castle tower has now been reclaimed and developed into an industrial complex, and the castle's outer and inner walls have been beautifully restored.
