Hello, the port city of Busan has played a major role as a sea gateway since ancient times, but it is also the city where Konishi Yukinaga, the first of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's troops to invade Korea, landed in Busan, and the Bunroku Invasion began. There are several Japanese castles built at that time on the Busan coast, and one in Gupo, which faces Gimhae City across the Nakdong River.

Gupo Japanese Fortress is located near Gupo Market, a popular market for the common people in Busan bustling with merchants and shoppers. It is within walking distance of Deokcheon Station, where Busan Subway Lines 2 and 3 intersect. The small fortress, measuring just 2,000 square meters, sits on a small hill 76 meters above sea level and was built in 1593 by Kobayakawa Takakage and others as a subsidiary fortress of the Japanese fortress on Takeshima in Gimhae City across the Nakdong River.
Located almost in the center of the coastal Japanese fortress belt stretching from Ulsan to Suncheon, Gupo Japanese Fortress was a strategically advantageous location for inland operations centered on the Nakdong River, along with Jukdo Japanese Fortress in Gimhae City and Yangsan Japanese Fortress in South Gyeongsang Province further upstream.

If you leave Exit 10 at Deokcheon Station on Busan Subway Line 500 or XNUMX and go straight for about XNUMX meters, you will see the elevated road on which the Namhae Expressway runs. Go under it and climb the hill on the right corner, and you will see a temple called Kuryunsa on your right, and Japanese castle is located on the mountain behind the temple.

The Japanese castle walls have been relatively well preserved, and from the top of the castle, where fields are located, you can see the Nakdong River and Gimhae City.
After visiting Gupo's attractions, Gupo Market and Gupo Japanese Castle, you can take the subway from Deokcheon Station on Line 3 to the last stop, Daejeo Station, where you can transfer to the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail Transit to access Gimhae City, the royal capital of Geumgwan Gaya, and Gimhae International Airport.
