Ulsan is the world's only ceramic producer and Korea's largest ceramic producer, producing over 50% of the nation's ceramics. Oegosan Ceramic Arts Village in Ulju-gun, Ulsan Metropolitan City was formed in 1957 when Heo Deok-man moved there and began firing ceramics.
The village grew rapidly after the Korean War, when demand for ceramics increased and people flocked to the village to learn ceramic techniques. In the 1960s and 1970s, about 350 artisans and potters lived in the village. As of 2008, 128 of the 40 households in the village are engaged in earthenware businesses, producing more than 50% of the nation's earthenware production.
Designated by Ulsan Metropolitan City as a traditional pottery experience village, Onggi Village includes an Onggi Hall, an Onggi exhibition hall, a permanent sales area, and an experience and training center.
