Andong Hahoe Village

Andong Hahoe Village is a famous tourist spot in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province. It was named Hahoe Village because the Nakdonggang River flows around the village. Andong Hahoe Village was established in 2010 as a tourist spot in North Gyeongsang Province.Gyeongju CityGyeongjuYangdong Folk VillageIt has also been registered as a World Heritage Site.

Hahoe Village is a village where the traditional houses of the Joseon Dynasty's Yangban (old aristocratic class) and thatched roof houses of commoners remain in their original form, and is not an artificially constructed village like a folk village, but a living cultural asset where people still live today. The entire village has been designated as an Important Folk Cultural Resource, and in 2010, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with Gyeongju Yangdong Village.

Hahoe Village, where you can feel the breath of people from the past as you walk around the village looking at each old house, is also well known as the village of the Pungsan Ryu clan, as many famous figures from the family have come from there, including brothers Ryu Un-ryong and Ryu Seong-ryong.

Treasures "Yōshin-do" and "Chūkō-do"

The main attractions of Hahoe Village are the designated national treasures, Yangshindang and Chunghyodang. Yangshindang was the head residence of the Pungsan Ryu clan, where Ryu Un-ryong also lived, and was built in the 1600s.

Chunghyodang was built in memory of Yoo Seong-ryong after his death and displays his belongings. There are also many old houses designated as important folk materials, such as Namchon House, Bukchon House, and Juiljae, as well as the family home of Ryu Siwon, the 13th generation grandson of Yoo Seong-ryong.

Hahoe Village Mask Play (Hahoe Byeolshin-gut Dalnori)

A masked play (Hahoe Byeolshin-gut Dalnori) is held at the special performance hall at the entrance to Hahoe Village. It is performed wearing a mask called Dal in Korean and has been passed down by the common people of Hahoe Village since the mid-12th century.

Common people would use these masked plays to please the gods, ward off misfortunes in their villages, and bring good fortune. The plays exposed and lampooned the falsehoods of the yangban and scholars, and portrayed the joys and sorrows of the lives of the common people, who were subordinate to the ruling class, through humorous actions, making them entertaining and inviting to laughter.

Buyongdae, where many movies and dramas have been filmed

After taking your time looking around Hahoe Village, we recommend heading up to Buyongdae Dae on the opposite bank, which is 65 meters above sea level and has become a popular filming location for Korean historical dramas and movies.

The best way to get there is to take a ferry across the Nakdonggang River, which flows in an S-shape around Hahoe Village. If there is no ferry available, drive for about 5 minutes around the river to reach the base of the Buyongdae cliffs. From there, walk up the back road of Hwacheon Seowon Seowon and climb the mountain for about 5 minutes to reach Buyongdae, where you can get a panoramic view of Hahoe Village.

Many movies and dramas, including the KBS drama "Chuno" starring Jang Hyuk, a Busan-born actor from South Korea, Bae Yong-jun's film "Scandal," and the KBS drama "Hwang Jini" starring Ha Ji-won, were filmed at Buyongdae in Hahoe Village and Okyeonjeongsa Temple, which is located at the base of the Buyongdae cliffs. As a result, it has become a tourist destination for many fans.

Samshindang

Samshindang, located in the center of the village, has been an object of deep faith for the villagers since ancient times, and is home to a large 600-year-old zelkova tree. Every year on the 1th day of the first lunar month, a village festival is held to worship the Samshindang. People pray for peace, a good harvest, and long life without illness for the village.
