A temple in Palgongsan, beautiful with autumn leaves
Hello. Palgongsan Mountain, beloved by the people of Daegu, is located about 18km northeast from Dongdaegu KTX Station. In autumn, when the trees turn red and yellow, Palgongsan Mountain's circular road becomes a fiery tunnel of autumn leaves, attracting many tourists who come to enjoy the beautiful autumn foliage.
Donghwasa Temple is located on Palgongsan Mountain, a 1192m-high mountain that is one of Korea's leading Buddhist tourist destinations. The temple was founded by the monk Geukdal during the reign of King Sojiwang (?-500) of Silla and was originally called Yogasa, but was rebuilt by Simjiwangsa during the reign of King Heungdeok (826-836) and was named Donghwasa because the paulownia trees bloomed even in winter. The current form of Donghwasa Temple was rebuilt in 1732.

After parking your car and entering the temple grounds, you will see a tower called Bongseollu across the garden. Bongseollu was named after the spot where a phoenix has its tail down, and there is an egg-shaped stone ball just in front of the stairs leading up to the tower, which is said to represent a phoenix holding an egg. Once you pass through Bongseollu, you will see the main hall, Daeungjeon, in front of you and the buildings on either side, including Hwaeomdang and Beokhadang.

The highlight of Donghwasa Temple is the 1992m-tall Tongil Yakusinyorai Buddha, which was completed in 30 and is located under the temple. This Buddha, built to pray for the unification of North and South Korea, was made of orange-coloured stone from Iksan City, Jeollabuk-do, and was constructed by 108 stonemasons over a period of about seven months. In front of the Buddha is the Tongil Daebuddha Hall, which has two basement floors and three aboveground floors.
