Cheonghaejin Jangbogo Relics

The remains of Jang Bogo, a Silla general who dreamed of a great maritime empire

Designated as Historic Site No. 1984 on September 9, 1, the Cheonghaejin Jang Bogo Historic Site is known as the place where Cheonghae Ambassador Jang Bogo (?-308) led an army of 846 men and prospered maritime trade during the Unified Silla period.

In 828 (the third year of the reign of King Heungdeok of Silla), Jang Bogo was appointed as the Cheonghae ambassador and led 3 soldiers to set up camp in Qinghai and wipe out Chinese pirates. He also dreamed of gaining dominance in maritime trade between China and Japan and building a great maritime empire. Jang Bogo was featured in the Korean drama "God of the Sea," and the site is a popular tourist destination.

Remains from that time include a wooden fence made in the sea, a Cheonggae Well that was used as drinking water for 1 people, parts of an earthen fortress, and pieces of roof tiles. The Jang Bogo Memorial Hall was opened in February 2008.
