It is one of the Sambosa temples in Korea and was founded in the Silla period. It is the largest temple complex in the country. On June 1, 2018, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name "Yamasa, Mountain Monasteries of Korea".

Tongdosa Temple, one of the Three Treasures Temples of Korea along with Haeinsa Temple and Songgwangsa Temple, is a Buddhist temple built in 646 during the reign of Queen Seondeok of the Silla Dynasty to house the Buddha's relics and the robe said to have been used by Shakyamuni Buddha, which he brought back from the Tang Dynasty in China.
It was burned down during the Imjin Japanese Invasion in 1592, but was rebuilt in 1601 and underwent major repairs in 1641, making it the largest temple in Korea with 35 buildings. Tongdosa Temple does not house a principal Buddha statue, as it is a temple that houses the Buddha's relics. The pagoda that houses the Buddha's relics is located behind the main hall and can be seen from the windows of the main hall.
