Songgwangsa Temple

Among the Three Treasure Temples, this is a famous temple known as the Sohoji Temple because it has produced many eminent monks.

In Buddhism, the Buddha treasure, the Dharma treasure, and the Sangha treasure are called the Three Treasures, and the temples that house these treasures are called Triple Treasure Temples.

Songgwangsa Temple, located at the western foot of Jogyesan Mountain, northwest of Suncheon City, is a famous temple known as the Sangbosa Temple for having produced many of the three great monks.

Songgwangsa Temple was founded by Zen Master Hyerin at the end of the Silla Dynasty as Kilsangsa Temple. In the 27th year of the reign of King Myeongjong of Goryeo, Jinull, the founder of the Jogye Order of Korea, renamed Kilsangsa Temple to Shuzensa Temple when he launched the "Jeonghye Seoksa" movement to break away from secularized Buddhism and call for new training and dedication. In the 4th year of the reign of King Heejong, it was renamed Songgwangsa Temple. Up until now, 16 high priests, including Jinull, have been produced from the temple, and their portraits are enshrined in the National Master's Hall of Songgwangsa Temple.

The current Songgwangsa Temple has suffered from multiple fires and 33 buildings, including the main hall, were restored during construction work carried out from 1984 to 1988.

Songgwangsa Temple is home to many cultural assets that are on par with national treasures, but it also boasts three famous items: the Hagi no Hitsu, Ssangshou, and Nonggen Nanshi. The Hagi no Hitsu is a huge rice container carved into a large dead tree, and is a large wooden container that can hold rice for 4000 believers at a time. At Tenshiam Temple in Songgwangsa Temple, there are two huge fragrant woods called Ssangshou, which are made of curved pieces of wood. There is also the Nonggen Nanshi, a handicraft bowl at Songgwangsa Temple that is a visual treat but cannot be made twice.
