Mongchontoseong Fortress

Mongchontoseong Fortress, an early Baekje fortress, is located in the vast, green Olympic Park.

Hello. When we think of Seoul, South Korea, we may recall cultural assets from the Yi Dynasty such as Gyeongbokgung Palace located in the center of Seoul. However, just one subway stop away from Lotte World Tower, the tallest building in South Korea, which will open in April 2017, is Mongchontoseong Fortress, a castle from the early Baekje period.

Mongchontoseong Fortress, located within the vast Olympic Park that was built for the Seoul Olympics in 1988, is an earthen fortress built by tamping down the natural hills of the Han River to defend against the Goguryeo forces that invaded from the north in the 3rd or 4th century. The fortress is shaped like a diamond, measuring 730m north to south and 570m east to west, with the entire wall measuring approximately 2,700m in length.

In addition, several excavations have unearthed the wooden fence and moat that were the castle's representative defensive structures, the remains of the people who lived within the castle, storage pits, two ancient tombs, and over 2 other items, including earthenware and ironware relics that are believed to date back to the early Baekje period, making this a valuable resource for research into early Baekje.

Olympic Park is a vast park with a total area of ​​43 square meters, and is full of greenery. In addition to Mongchontoseong Fortress, it also has facilities such as the Peace Gate, a walking trail, a sculpture park, the Olympic Art Museum, an event plaza, and a stadium. There are also exhibition halls and museums where you can learn about the early Baekje period, such as the Hanseong Baekje Museum, which opened in April 8000, the Baekje Residence Site Exhibition Hall, and the Mongchon History Museum.
