Bunsanseong Fortress

A mountain fortress with a panoramic view of Gimhae city, the capital of the Iron Kingdom of Geumgwan Gaya

Hello. If you use the Busan Gimhae Light Rail from Sasang Station on Busan Subway Line 2, you can go around Gimhae city, where the ruins of Geumgwan Gaya, a kingdom that flourished in iron culture for 491 years until it was annexed by Silla in 532, remain. On Bunseongsan Mountain, which stands 327 meters above sea level in the north of Gimhae city, there is a Daeme-style (mountaintop-style) mountain fortress, which is often seen in ancient countries.

About 900 meters of the fortress wall remained on the slope facing the city from the summit, but due to the restoration and improvement plan for Bonsanseong Fortress that began in 2000, restoration work is scheduled to continue until 2015. However, the fortress offers a wonderful view of Gimhae city and the Gimhae plain, as well as the historical sites of Geumgwan Gaya, such as the Tomb of King Suro, Gimhae Museum, and Daeseong-dong Tomb Museum. In addition, Gaya History Theme Park, located just southeast of the fortress, opened in May 2015, so you can enjoy Bonsanseong Fortress and the Gaya History Theme Park on foot.

According to three monuments within the fortress and the New and Expanded Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam, Bonsanseong Fortress was originally built by Gimhae Magistrate Park Ha-eun to prepare for the invasion of Japanese pirates at the end of the Goryeo Dynasty by piling up stones in the old mountain fortress, and was rebuilt in 1871. Since fragments of pottery from Gaya and Silla have been excavated within the fortress, it is assumed to be an ancient mountain fortress from the Silla or Gaya period.

Also within the castle is Manjangdae, a beacon station from the Joseon Dynasty that was restored in 1999 and is beloved by Gimhae residents. There is also Haeunsa Temple, which is said to have been built to express gratitude for the kindness of Queen Heo, wife of King Kimsuro, the first king of Geumgwan Gaya, for safely crossing the sea from Ayutthaya in India.
