World Heritage Site: Jisan-dong Tombs

Hello. The Jisan-dong Tumuli, located behind the Daegaya Museum, about a 5-minute taxi ride from the suburban bus terminal in Goryeong City, are a group of ancient burial mounds where the ruling class of the Daegaya period was buried. Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in September 2023, they are a representative site of Korean Gaya culture.

Located in Daegaya-eup, Goryeong County, Gyeongsangbuk-do, the area features a spectacular landscape with over 700 burial mounds densely clustered along its main ridge.

The Gaya Tombs, constructed from the 5th century until the late 6th century when Daegaya was conquered by Silla, showcase Daegaya's unique system of governance and civil engineering techniques.

This area boasts a unique landscape of densely packed large burial mounds on high hills rather than flat land, clearly illustrating the sacrificial burial culture and beliefs about the afterlife that are characteristic of ancient Korean history. A walking path has been developed along a 3km section, and it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to explore the entire area. The higher you climb, the larger the burial mounds become, and you can enjoy expansive views overlooking the town of Goryeong.

Visiting both the Daegaya Museum and the Daegaya Royal Tombs Exhibition Hall, located at the entrance to the burial mounds, will allow you to gain a deeper understanding of Daegaya's history and its sacrificial burial culture.

At the beginning of the walking trail to Jisan-dong Tomb Group, there is the Daegaya Royal Tombs Exhibition Hall, which reproduces the size of Tomb No. 32, which was excavated and confirmed to be the largest tomb in Korea, where a 44nd period burial site was excavated. After visiting the exhibition hall, you can take your time to explore the tombs on the mountain.

It takes about 44 minutes on foot from the Daegaya Royal Tombs Exhibition Hall to Tomb No. 15.
