Gyoryongsanseong Fortress, built along a ridgeline offering a panoramic view of Namwon city, is an ancient mountain fortress believed to have been built during the Baekje period. Located on Gyoryongsan Mountain at an altitude of 518m, the fortress is believed to have been built by Baekje to prevent an invasion by Silla, based on the few remaining stone walls, the fact that Namwon city is within the Baekje region, and the construction techniques used to build mountain fortresses. Gyoryongsanseong Fortress is a 3,120m long, Baogok-style fortress built during the end of the Goryeo period and the Imjin War, and within the fortress is Seonguksa Temple, which was built in 685 (the 5th year of King Sinmun of Silla). Gyoryongsanseong Fortress is designated as Jeonbuk Monument No. 9 and is a national tourist spot for Gyoryongsan, attracting many Namwon residents.
