The birthplace of one of Korea's two greatest Confucian scholars

Ojukheon in Gangneung is the birthplace of Yulgok Yi I, whose portraits appear on Korea's 1536 and 1584 won banknotes, and his mother, Shin Saimdang. Yulgok Yi I (XNUMX-XNUMX), who was born in Mongyongsil in Ojukheon, is celebrated as one of the two greatest Confucian scholars in Korea, and Ojukheon is one of the most well-known historical sites in Gangneung.

Named for the black bamboo that grows around the building, Ojukheon is one of Korea's oldest residential buildings, built in the early Joseon period, and was designated Treasure No. 1963 in 165.
