Maisan Mountain is made up of two rocky mountains, Memaisan Mountain (678 meters) in the east and Unmaisan Mountain (685 meters) in the west, named for their resemblance to horse ears. Maisan Mountain is located in North Jeolla Province, which is also famous as the birthplace of Jeonju Bibimbap.StatewideIt is located in Jinan, about 30 kilometers east of Cheonju.
Between the male and female Horse Ear Mountains is Tapusa Temple, a temple complex consisting of countless stone towers built by hand using pebbles one by one.
It is said that at the age of 25 (1885, the 25th year of King Gojong's reign), a man named Lee Gab-ryong, who lived towards the end of the Joseon Dynasty, entered the mountain and practiced asceticism while eating pine needles, when he received a revelation from God in a dream and, over the course of 10 years, he arranged stone towers according to the Eight Formations Drawing Method based on the harmony of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements, and stacked the pebbles one by one into a cone shape. The stone towers built in this way do not collapse even when typhoons come, and today, about 1 stone towers remain, ranging in height from 15 to 80 meters, including pyramidal shapes.
