Tongyeong-si [ Tongyeong-si 통영시 ]
It borders Geoje Island to the east, Namhae County to the west, and the sea to the south, and is dotted with small, beautiful islands. Among them, Hansan Island is a historic island where the famous general Yi Sun-sin set up camp and defeated the Japanese navy during the Imjin War (1592-1612).
The stretch from here to Yeosu is famous for its beautiful and clean waters, known as the "Hallyeo Waterway." In addition, Maemuldo Island has regular ferry services that make it a popular tourist destination. Mireuksan Mountain, located in the center of Mireukdo Island at an altitude of 461m, offers a panoramic view of the ocean from its peak, and the sunrise seen from there is spectacular. You can take a ropeway to the top, and enjoy the view from inside the gondola. To cross to Mireukdo Island, there is the first undersea tunnel in the East, which is only about 400m long.
Famous foods include Chungmu Kimbap. The sea is beautiful, so seafood is recommended if you come here. Oysters are especially famous.
